Bayside Baptist Church has had several names and locations since the original Swedish founders began meeting during the winter of 1887 with the desire to evangelize the Swedish population of Superior. In the summer of 1888, the church was officially recognized as The Swedish Baptist Church of West Superior. The next summer the first building was constructed on Sixth Street and Weeks Avenue. In the summer of 1899, this building was torn down and a larger one was built on the same site. It was dedicated in October 1900. A Certificate of Organization was filed with Douglas County on February 13, 1903.
Membership rose to 113 in 1908. In 1922, the little church on Weeks Avenue was destroyed by fire and the congregation moved, sooner than they had planned, into the new brick building they were constructing on Ogden Avenue. With this move the name of the church was changed to Ogden Avenue Baptist Temple of Superior. In the 1930s, English became the language of choice for the worship service, although there were still some special services done in Swedish. From 1947 to 1962, Sunday School grew to over 200. In 1964, the name was changed to Ogden Avenue Baptist Church.
The mid-1970s brought additional church growth and with limited parking, another building project was in sight. In 1994 we officially became Bayside Baptist Church with the construction of the building at the present location on Belknap Street and New York Avenue in the Billings Park area of Superior. We moved into this one level handicapped accessible building in January of 1995.
